When the cow grazes, it often consumes and swallows what is called tramp iron: baling and barbed wire, nails, stamples and other metallic objects. These tramp iron is indigestible and tends to lodge in the honeycombed walls of the reticulum, causing irritation and inflammation, known as Hardware Disease, resulting in lower milk production for dairy cattle or lower weight gain for feeder stock.

Cow magnets help prevent this disease by attracting stray metal from being lodged in the animal’s tissue. A rancher or dairy farmer feeds a magnet each calf at branding time, the magnet settles in the rumen or reticulum and remains there for the life of the animal.

Our Alnico Cow Magnets in Alnico Grade 5. Other types are available upon request. Cow magnets received their names from their use with dairy farmers and veterinarians to help prevent hardware disease in the cattle.
